President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed all National Resistance Movement (NRM) members to participate in a nationwide verification of the party’s village registers and the election of Local Council I (LCI) flagbearers, scheduled for Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

In a statement released on Saturday, May 3, 2025,  President Museveni called on all NRM members to gather at their village centres by 10:00 AM for a two-part process: first, to confirm the authenticity of names in the NRM registers; and second, to elect LCI party flagbearers and other local structure leaders.

“I will personally be in Rwakitura village and Maama will be in Ntungamo Ireenga to take part in the verification,” Museveni said.

Museveni confirmed that he will personally oversee the exercise in Rwakitura village, while First Lady Janet Museveni will do the same in Ntungamo, Ireenga.

However, he clarified that he will not endorse or line up behind any candidate during the elections, citing his neutral role as NRM Chairman.

The President announced the suspension of both Cabinet and Parliamentary sittings on May 5 and May 6, respectively.

“To ensure that the leaders participate, there will be no cabinet meeting on Monday, the 5th of May, 2025, and I have also agreed with the Rt. Hon. Speaker that there will be no Parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, the 6th of May 2025,” he noted.

Museveni reflected on the recent Labour Day celebrations in Nakapiripirit, hailing the government’s infrastructural achievements in previously marginalized regions such as Karamoja and Moroto. He criticized detractors of the NRM’s record, describing them as “Nshoninkyes”—those who downplay or deny progress.

He also acknowledged infrastructure challenges, including deteriorated sections of the Mityana–Fort Portal and Mukono–Jinja roads, attributing them to poor planning by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and the Ministry of Works. The President assured the public that corrective measures are underway.

The NRM Electoral Commission is expected to provide detailed guidelines for the May 6 verification and election process.
