The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the installation of expansion joints on Karuma Bridge along the Kampala–Gulu Highway and Ayago Bridge on the Karuma–Olwiyo Road.
The works will take place from 10 -31 March 2025, requiring a full closure of Karuma Bridge.
Edward Katumba Wamala, the minister of Works and Transport, said the closure is necessary to ensure the bridge’s long-term stability and safety.
“Karuma Bridge is a key transport link, and these repairs are essential to prevent further structural deterioration,” he said.
He urged the public to bear with the temporary inconvenience.
“We request motorists to use alternative routes as we work to complete these critical upgrades. Our priority is to ensure that the bridge remains safe and durable for all road users,” Katumba said.
The ministry emphasized the importance of these repairs for the country’s transport network.
“These bridges are crucial for trade, travel, and national development. If we do not fix them now, we risk bigger problems in the future,” he explained.
On Ayago Bridge, which is also set for repairs, the minister noted, “The expansion joints have weakened due to long-term use. This intervention will ensure a smooth and safe road network for travelers heading towards northern Uganda and West Nile.”
During this period, motorists are advised to use alternative routes, including Kampala – Gulu/West Nile via Luweero, Kafu, Masindi, and Pakwach, or Kampala – Lira via Iganga, Nakalama, Tirinyi, and Soroti. Travelers to Lira may also use the Rwenkunye – Apac route through Masindi Port Ferry.
