Five people have been killed and several others severely injured in a devastating accident in Mukono district along the Mukono-Kampala highway.
This tragic accident happened on February 26 2025 in Kibati Village, Namataba Town Council, Mukono District, when a cement trailer, registration number UAW 217A, traveling from Lugazi to Mukono, lost control and struck several pedestrians by the roadside killing five people on spot, leaving several others severely injured.
According to According to eyewitnesses, including Francis Tabu, the LC II Chairperson of Kibati Village, the accident happened near Nakalasa-Kibati Stage, commonly known as Kampala Cement. This area is known for its bustling activity, with a hotel that accommodates Kenyan long-route drivers and a boda boda stage housing over 20 motorcycles.
Tabu added that when the cement trailer lost control it veered off the road running over roadside food vendors, customers eating and boda boda riders at the stage.
’’People at the Kibati stage are still in shock and fear over this accident, it was so gruesome! even the injured were left in a terrible condition,’’ Tabu said.
Tabu further revealed that police from Mukono came and took the injured to different hospitals in Mukono for first aid and medical assistance.
The Namataba Town Council Mayor Prince Douglas Namujali confirmed the incident and revealed that accidents have become so rampant on this road and urged the traffic police to do something about it as many have lost their lives.
’’We need traffic police roadblocks to be instilled back on the roads because drivers are driving old vehicles in poor mechanical condition which has resulted into loss of innocent lives,’’ Namujali noted.
Once police were contacted, they said that investigations as to what caused the accident are underway; however, a statement will be released once investigations are done.
This incident, like many others, highlight the dangers posed by reckless driving, use of vehicles in poor mechanical conditions, thus need for traffic police to increase restrictions on traffic rules and regulations with hefty penalties including jail sentence to curb the rate of road accidents that have become a major concern.
The government’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety, including the implementation of the National Road Safety Action Plan 2021/22–2025/26, are crucial steps towards reducing the alarming rate of road accidents.
