The Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development has revealed significant developments in its mandate areas as the holiday season sets in.

Speaking to the media on December 23, 2024, at Uganda Media Center in Kampala, Minister Betty Amongi emphasized the ministry’s milestones and key areas of concern for Ugandans during the festive season.

Minister Amongi highlighted the notable growth of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) portfolio, which has surged from UGX 18 trillion in 2022 to UGX 23.2 trillion in 2024.

“This growth demonstrates the resilience and efficiency of the fund. Over 4,000 new voluntary savers have joined in the past month alone,” she stated.

The minister also revealed that the reforms in the externalization of labour had reduced complaints significantly.

“We introduced a bond system for labour export companies, and through cooperation with international partners, we successfully facilitated the return of 277 Ugandan girls detained in Saudi Arabia,” Amongi stated.

Addressing workplace safety, Amongi urged manufacturers to invest in quality machinery and protective gear to minimize hazards.

“The safety of workers must remain a priority. Employers need to ensure that workplaces meet acceptable safety standards,” Amongi stated.

The minister called on the public to support vulnerable groups, including the elderly, orphans, and street children especially women and children.
