The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has called upon the newly sworn-in members of parliament to concentrate on the issues of national unity, social justice, and good governance rather than their selfish interests as the 12th Parliament opens for business.

The party spokesperson, Sharon Arach Oyat issued the statement on May 13th, 2026, at a press conference held at Uganda House.

Oyat congratulated all MPs sworn in on that day and those to be sworn in on May 14th and 15th, including 12 members elected on behalf of the UPC.

“Let us be members of parliament that concentrate on national unity, service delivery of the people of Uganda,” Oyat said.

She noted that it was time for the MPs not to take up the role of delivering basic services such as ambulances, which should be the responsibility of the government to deliver.

Oyat added that the government should relieve the MPs of this burden to avoid the temptation to fall into corruption to serve their constituencies.

The spokesperson called for fair distribution of services across all regions in the country, noting that development only takes place in regions with strong ruling party representation.

Oyat called upon the MPs to unite and avoid division and fighting among themselves while holding both the central and local governments accountable for their actions.

In addition, the party congratulated the 12th Parliament in its quest to be more focused and independent in its roles in nation building. The party warned that each decision made in parliament impacts the entire Ugandan generations for decades to come.

Oyat recalled the example of the age limit bill and recently enacted protection of sovereignty bill that arose from the lack of integrity within parliament.

Regarding the Kalangala election violation notice issued by the Electoral Commission, UPC will undertake investigations through the ground leaders before making any participation decision.

The briefing indicated the commitment of UPC towards ensuring an effective parliament for Ugandans.
