Uganda is set to mark the 36th Heroes’ Day Anniversary under the theme “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration.” The national celebration will honor the enduring legacy of Uganda’s heroes, with a strong emphasis on promoting unity and inspiring patriotism across generations.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to preside over the event and will present awards to 50 distinguished Ugandans in recognition of their exceptional contributions in various fields, including military service, civilian dedication, and public service.

Among the medals to be awarded are the National Independence Medal, the Nalubaale Medal, the Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the Luwero Triangle Medal, each symbolizing a unique aspect of national service and sacrifice.

The commemorative event will take place at Lyantonde Technical Institute, located in Kaaliro Town Council, Lyantonde District. This location was chosen due to its historical significance during the 1981–1986 liberation struggle, where it served as a key transit corridor for freedom fighters and a critical recruitment area for the bush war.

Speaking at the Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, Minister for the Presidency Hon. Milly Babirye Babalanda emphasized Lyantonde’s role in shaping Uganda’s liberation history, reinforcing its symbolic relevance as the host of this year’s celebration.

According to her, Lyantonde district, which was carved from greater Rakai, was selected particularly because it played a critical role during the 1981-86 liberation struggle, serving as a transit route for rebels and a corridor where many joined the bush war.

“It was not only a logistical corridor but also a place where civilians played critical roles, such as recruiting for the bush war, providing material support like food and money, and offering moral encouragement,” she stated.

She further stated that the sacrifices made by locals, including living in fear and facing brutal reprisals, highlight their resilience and dedication, making this celebration a tribute to their enduring legacy.

She highlighted that the district’s population, primarily reliant on farming, has consistently supported President Museveni, with 100% support in previous elections, reflecting their alignment with the ideals of chasing away poverty from their homesteads.

She emphasized that the celebration of National Heroes Day, along with educational programs and public awareness initiatives, underscores the importance of remembering and learning from the past.

“Museums, monuments, and memorials serve as symbols of memory, preserving the legacy of national heroes and fostering a sense of unity among Ugandans,” she noted.

Babalanda reaffirmed that Uganda’s transformation, as highlighted during such celebrations, is evident in its attainment of lower-middle-income status and the anticipated flow of oil revenue by 2026, positioning it to become a middle-income country.

The 36th National Heroes Day celebration on June 9, 2025, will serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made, the progress achieved, and the responsibilities of current and future generations to uphold these ideals.
