Government has announced a nationwide measles-rubella immunization campaign targeting millions of children, following a surge in infections that has seen more than 10,000 cases reported across the country.

The development was revealed in a statement released today by Dr. Charles Olaro, who said the country is experiencing a worrying increase in measles outbreaks, particularly among unvaccinated children under the age of five.

“Uganda is currently experiencing an increase in cases of measles, a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease, especially among children who have not been fully immunized,” Olaro stated.

According to the Ministry of Health, over 10,163 cases and 60 deaths were recorded in 2025 alone, with 66 districts reporting confirmed outbreaks. In 2026, at least 20 districts have already registered new cases, raising concerns about continued transmission.

Olaro noted that the outbreaks are largely driven by low vaccination coverage, particularly for the second dose of the measles-rubella vaccine, which remains significantly below the required threshold.

“Many children are missing the second dose of the vaccine given at 18 months, leaving them vulnerable to infection,” he said.

In response, the Ministry of Health, with support from partners including GAVI, WHO and UNICEF, will roll out a nationwide immunization campaign scheduled for October 1 to 5, 2026. The exercise will target all children aged between 9 and 59 months, regardless of their previous vaccination status.

The campaign will be conducted through fixed, outreach and mobile vaccination posts across the country, including schools and community centers, in an effort to reach even the most remote populations.

Health officials say the initiative aims to close immunity gaps, strengthen routine immunization systems, and prevent further outbreaks.

Olaro urged parents and caregivers to ensure that all eligible children are vaccinated, emphasizing that measles remains preventable through timely immunization.

“Every child under five years should receive two doses of the measles-rubella vaccine to achieve full protection,” he said.

The Ministry has also called on community leaders, health workers, and partners to support mobilization efforts to ensure maximum coverage during the campaign.

Authorities warn that without urgent action, the country risks continued outbreaks, particularly in areas with low vaccination uptake and limited access to health services.
