Uganda Cranes Coach Paul Put has expressed cautious optimism as the national team begins its final training camp ahead of the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 tournament. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, shortly after the arrival of the players, Put addressed the challenges caused by a last-minute directive from FIFA that has reduced their preparation time.

According to Put, the new directive means that foreign-based players will only be available around December 16 or 17. He said this makes it difficult to prepare properly but assured the public that the team will do its best despite the setback. He added that the situation has also been complicated by Mauritania’s schedule, as they have two friendly matches on December 13 against FAR Rabat and on December 17 against Gabon.

Put also praised FUFA’s long-term technical strategy, especially the decision to include a local assistant coach. He said he prefers working with someone who understands local players well and noted that FUFA aims to build future coaching talent.

Speaking about the squad, Put said he is confident that the players have a great opportunity to show their abilities to the world and possibly change their lives through good performance. He encouraged the team to give their best and acknowledged their hard work.

He also addressed the difficult selection process, apologizing to the players who were left out. He encouraged them to stay strong and continue working hard, reminding them that football is unpredictable and opportunities can come at any time.

Uganda Cranes will compete in Group C alongside Egypt, Ivory Coast, and Gabon. Their first match will take place on January 11, 2026, in Casablanca.
