The Joint Staff Political Commissariat (JSPC) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Maj. Gen. Henry Matsiko, has today challenged students of Kawempe Muslim Secondary School to embrace knowledge, discipline, and patriotism, saying the future belongs to individuals who invest in learning and use knowledge to solve society’s challenges.

Matsiko delivered the message during a National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps (NSPC) orientation session held at the school, where he addressed learners on the importance of education, responsible citizenship, and personal discipline.

Speaking to the students, Matsiko emphasized that knowledge remains one of the most powerful tools for personal transformation and national development.

He also  encouraged learners to develop a passion for acquiring knowledge, noting that informed citizens are better equipped to make sound decisions, innovate, and contribute positively to their communities.

“The future belongs to the knowledgeable,” Matsiko told the students.

He explained that education should go beyond passing examinations and instead equip young people with the ability to identify problems, seek solutions, and contribute to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.

In his address he also highlighted the importance of orientation programmes, saying they help young people understand their purpose in life, prepare for future responsibilities, and make informed decisions.

According to Maj. Gen. Matsiko, the government’s patriotism programmes are intended to nurture responsible, productive, and patriotic citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to national development.

He further urged students to dedicate themselves to their studies while embracing hard work and productive activities.

Referring to President Yoweri Museveni’s “No More Sleep” message, Maj. Gen. Matsiko cautioned learners against laziness and complacency, stressing that success is achieved through commitment, perseverance, and determination.

He told the students that idleness often leads to poverty and missed opportunities, while discipline and hard work create pathways to success.

The students were also encouraged to make responsible choices regarding their health and personal conduct.

Maj. Gen. Matsiko advised learners to exercise self-discipline, avoid risky behaviour, and uphold moral values as they pursue their academic goals and future careers.

He further noted that patriotism is not only about loving one’s country but also about being informed, responsible, and committed to national progress.

The students were encouraged to use their education as a tool for self-improvement and service to society, while remaining focused on their long-term goals.

The orientation session formed part of the ongoing NSPC programme aimed at instilling values of patriotism, discipline, hard work, integrity, and national consciousness among Uganda’s youth.
