Joel Ssenyonyi, the National Unity Platform (NUP) party Spokesperson, who also doubles as the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), has said that the current government stand against corruption has vindicated many opposition leaders and activists who have for so long spoken about the high corruption rate in government.
While addressing members of the press at the party headquarters at Makerere Kavule on Thursday, August 27th, 2026, Ssenyonyi said that many activists and opposition members who stood their ground to expose cases of corruption were branded as foreign agents and accused of witch hunt but with the current exposure of corruption by government ministers, many activists have been vindicated.
“As NUP we have been vindicated, you remember the Uganda airlines saga, they said it was witch hunting, you remember the parliament corruption exhibition and many said we are foreign agents but they are now taking the same direction,” Ssenyonyi said.
However, Ssenyonyi urged government to not administer justice selectively but rather take serious action against big people in government and not just arrest those involved in small cases but as well go for those embezzling billions of shillings.
“What ministers are doing is what we were talking about and now everybody is able to see. If government is serious about the fight against corruption then we want the government to take actions against big shots not small fish, big ones are being given mercy and then others are being arrested. You remember the Karamoja iron sheets saga, there were very many Ministers who are powerful but they were not arrested but only Nandutu was taken in. There shouldn’t be selective application of justice all should be held accountable,” Ssenyonyi said.
On the issue of selective Justice, the NUP Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya stated that there were many atrocities committed by the government during the past elections but no justice has been served but only the NUP supporters were arrested and denied and many have since been denied bail.
“We all saw what happened in Butambala, Iganga and other parts of the country where the security agencies killed our supporters and no justice has been served and yet they continue to hold many of our party supporters and many have been denied bail even when they have fulfilled all requirements for bail application,” Rubongoya noted.
Rubongoya also stated that the NUP lawyers have informed the secretariat that court clerks in different districts have confided in them about existing charge sheets for the arrest of the party president, Robert Kyagulanyi and that if he is to come back soon there are justifications for his arrest.
“Through our lawyers we have asked the Director of public prosecutions (DPP), to present any charges available against our president and make them known through the correct channels,” Rubongoya noted.
The aftermath of the 2026 general elections so many NUP supporters were arrested and some before the elections and many have not been granted bail as others have been lucky to be granted bail by different courts.
With the arrest of many NUP supporters, the NUP party president managed to run to exile in fear for his life after his home being put on 24-hour surveillance that many thought was intended to have him arrested and charged for different cases purportedly committed during the presidential campaigns like inciting violence.
