Hoima City’s development is poised for a major boost following the completion of the new 20,000-seat Hoima City Stadium, one of Uganda’s flagship sports infrastructure projects for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The facility was inspected on December 4th, 2025, by the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Constructed in a record eighteen months, the stadium is expected to play a pivotal role in transforming Hoima into a key sports and tourism hub, complementing its already fast-growing oil and gas-driven economy.
Gen Kainerugaba was taken on a guided tour by Project Manager Murat Altun, who showcased key features including VIP sections, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, modern changing rooms, an external training pitch, and a 2,000 seat indoor arena equipped with a basketball court.
During the inspection, Gen. Kainerugaba said the national importance of such investments, noting that world-class infrastructure will not only support sports excellence but also fuel economic growth in host regions.
“The stadium’s high quality standards must be preserved and replicated in other national projects, officials must maintain the facility to international standards” he added
The stadium is one of Uganda’s designated venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.
Its completion strengthens Uganda’s readiness to meet CAF requirements and host major international events.
Hon. Peter Ogwang the Minister of State for Sports, the Chairman of the National Council of Sports, and Hoima City’s Mayor, praised the project’s timely completion, saying it reflects the growing commitment to expanding sports infrastructure outside Kampala.
Gen Kainerugaba reaffirmed the government’s strategic vision for sports development, noting the role of top-tier facilities in nurturing talent and elevating Uganda’s global competitiveness.
“Providing and maintaining top-tier facilities is fundamental to nurturing Ugandan athletic talent and achieving international sporting success,” Gen Kainerugaba said.
For Hoima, which is already emerging as a key economic zone due to the oil and gas sector, the stadium adds another pillar of growth positioning the city as a future sports and tourism hub.
