The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has set May 13, 2025, as the date to vet its two nominated presidential flag bearer candidates ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The party’s Electoral Commission, chaired by Boniface Toterebuka Bamwenda, announced during a media briefing on May 12 that the commission will meet physically with the candidates and their agents on May 13, 2025.
“This will be the first meeting as the commission will be involved in consensus building,” Bamwenda said.
The vetting follows a nomination process that began in October 2024 with the collection of expression of interest forms.
Initially, five members and six aspirants expressed interest, but after fulfilling all requirements, only two candidates were nominated on May 7, 2025: the FDC Party President, Eng. Amuriat Oboi Patrick, and the Secretary General, Nathan Nandala Mafabi.
The party’s electoral roadmap also includes timelines for Special Interest Groups (SIGs) such as youth, older persons, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Nomination forms for SIGs were available from May 12 to May 13, with nominations scheduled for May 15 and 16 at district levels. These preparations aim to ensure inclusive participation ahead of national nominations starting June 2.
Bamwenda urged district electoral supervisors to maintain impartiality and constitutionalism throughout the nomination process.
He also reiterated that the FDC does not charge fees for candidates contesting councilor positions.
For other party positions, the deadline for submitting expression of interest forms is May 30, 2025. Nomination forms for Members of Parliament, LCV Chairpersons, Mayors, and Division/Sub-County Chairpersons will be picked on June 4 and 5, with nominations occurring on June 9 and 10.
The FDC’s nomination and vetting process is part of its broader strategy to ensure a transparent and democratic selection of candidates to contest in Uganda’s 2026 elections.
The party’s National Delegates Committee is expected to make the final decision on the presidential flag bearer by July 31, 2025, setting the stage for the upcoming electoral contest.
