The collapsed section of the Mityana Road at Buyala, which disrupted traffic since April 16, 2025, is expected to fully reopen by the end of today, April 19, following swift emergency repairs by the Ministry of Works and Transport.

This morning, the Minister of State for Works, Hon. Musa Ecweru, conducted an on-site inspection of the damaged section to assess the progress of restoration works.

The collapse, which had disrupted transport on the busy Kampala-Mityana route, drew immediate government attention due to its significance in connecting central Uganda to the western region.

“We responded swiftly with emergency measures to restore safe passage. By the end of today, we expect full connectivity to be restored at Buyala,” Hon. Ecweru stated during his visit.

“This road is a vital economic artery, and ensuring its functionality is a top priority,” he added.

The repair works have involved drainage systems clearance, weakened structural reinforcement, and surface restoration to allow for both light and heavy vehicles to pass without obstruction.

As part of his broader inspection mission, Hon. Ecweru also toured the Mityana-Mubende and the Mubende-Fort Portal-Bundibugyo highways, where he assessed the current state of road infrastructure.

These inspections are meant to guide government interventions aimed at enhancing road durability and ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow across key corridors.

“We are taking stock of all urgent repair needs across the country because timely maintenance is critical to avoid costly damage and inconvenience to road users.” Hon. Ecweru noted.

The Ministry of Works and Transport has assured the public that both short-term and long-term solutions are being planned to improve Uganda’s national road network resilience, especially in areas prone to erosion and flooding.

Motorists have been advised to remain patient and follow traffic guidance until normal traffic resumes later today.
