The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has called upon the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) to wake up, guard and secures the country’s borders jealously against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), before they go to the neighbors.
According to John Kikonyongo, the FDC Head of Publicity, it is a shame and gives the country a bad image before all Ugandans when ADF rebels kill people within the country.
Kikonyogo made the statement while eulogizing the two tourists and their driver that were shot dead in the hands of suspected ADF rebels.
“You are all aware of the two tourists that were killed. This is one of the things that kill our image as a country, and we have portrayed Uganda as a country that sheds blood. So, if we are to loss our tourists here, it’s really bad,” Kikonyogo said.
Kikonyongo noted that, the UPDF’s mandate is to secure the country’s borders as provided for in the constitution, that they shall guard borders of Uganda (article: 210D). However, they are sneaking into Uganda, when UPDF is busy in the Congo forests.
“Going to the Democratic Republic of Congo is secondary, guarding Ugandan borders and its citizens is prime. Our Army is very busy hitting the camps of ADF, but these individuals are in Uganda causing havoc,” Kikonyogo noted.
He said that, 40 school children were lost, two tourists and a driver under the merciless hands of the ADF in Kasese, adding that, the army is instead updating the nation of the success in DRC.
“Yes they are our brothers, but secure home borders first before that of the neighbor since we are told, they are sneaking through borders where our army is not manning,” Kikonyongo said.
Patrick Amuriat Oboi asked President Museveni to stop showcasing the country’s military might to neighboring countries, yet he has not secured the country’s borders. He equated it to one who ignores his family’s wellbeing while boasting to others in the village.
“The reason why UPDF was deployed in DRC in spite of not having Parliament’s approval, was to provide a lasting solution and eradicate ADF, but it has not brought the desired peace that has eluded us for decades,” Amuriat noted.
This follows last week’s killing of two foreign tourists who had come to Uganda for their honeymoon, and a local driver who was also a guide in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and their car set on fire.
