NUP’s Buwembo, Reign Granted Bail, Admitted at Rubaga Hospital

“At City Hall Court earlier, we checked on our comrades Buwembo Habib, Lubega Obed Reign, and others with whom they were arrested yesterday. Having been heavily assaulted and pepper sprayed, they've been temporarily freed on medical grounds after being referred by City Hall Clinic to Lubaga Hospital for X-ray and other medical examinations. They're of strong spirits. Supporting NUP is not a crime,” RUbongoya said.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) party Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya has confirmed that the party Secretary for Mobilisation, Habib Buwembo and comedian Obed Lubega aka Reign have been granted bail by the KCCA Court and been admitted at Rubaga hospital for treatment.

While addressing the press at City Hall on Monday, October 5th, 2026, Rubongoya said that the duo were released on medical grounds after being arrested on Sunday afternoon October 4th, 2026, as they celebrated Bobi Wine’s day at Kitebi Primary school playgrounds.

The Kampala City Lord Mayor, Ssalongo Ronald Balimwezo said that NUP is a registered party just like other parties and has the right to organise and mobilise support through different activities.

“Every time we try to do party activities we are teargassed and many of our supporters were arrested. PLU has been doing activities and all we see is police protecting them but as NUP, we are never allowed to do our activities. This is very bad and so unfair and not good for democracy and we condemn all these actions of the security agencies, which keep sabotaging our activities,” Balimwezo said.

NUP supporters were arrested on October 4th, 2026, as they attempted to celebrate Bobi Wine day across the country, as some were arrested at church while they attended service wearing Kyagulanyi Tshirts. According to Rubongoya other NUP supporters were also arrested in Karamoja sub region as they distributed clothes, foodstuffs, shoes and other materials to the needy people though were later released.

According the NUP secretariat, Bobi Wine day is supposed to be celebrated every first Sunday of the month to recognise the life and achievements of the party president Robert Kyagulanyi and his contribution to the struggle to liberate Uganda.
