Concerns have been growing online over the duplication and widespread circulation of a statement purportedly signed by Yoweri Museveni announcing the postponement of this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations due to Ebola concerns linked to Eastern Congo.

Following days of public debate and mixed reactions across social media platforms, Nexus Media has verified the authenticity of the document, which carries the President’s signature and outlines the reasons behind the decision to halt the annual religious gathering.

According to the statement, the decision was reached after consultations with the national epidemic response task force and religious leaders amid fears surrounding the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Eastern Congo, where thousands of pilgrims travel from annually to attend the June 3 celebrations at Namugongo.

“After consultations with the national epidemic response task force and religious leaders, we have decided to postpone the Martyrs’ Day to a later date, which will be communicated,” the statement reads in part.

The communication further explains that the move was intended to safeguard lives and minimize possible health risks associated with large gatherings and cross-border movement during the outbreak.

“This decision was made because Uganda receives thousands of pilgrims annually from Eastern Congo, which is currently experiencing an Ebola outbreak. To safeguard everyone’s lives, it is essential that this important event be postponed,” the statement adds.

The President also appealed to pilgrims who had already begun their journey to return home and continue observing the recommended health precautions.

“I encourage those who had begun their journey to return home, continue observing the precautionary measures, report anyone who is sick, and encourage those who are ill to seek medical care,” Museveni stated.

The statement concludes by acknowledging the inconvenience caused while emphasizing that the protection of life remains the top priority.

“We regret any inconvenience caused, but the protection of life must come first.”
