President Yoweri Museveni has announced plans to establish a modern center in honor of the late Archbishop of Uganda, Janani Luwum recognizing his immense contribution to the nation’s history, faith, and moral leadership.

The celebrations, held on February 16th, 2026, in Mucwini Kitgum district, Luwum’s birthplace, signified not only his martyrdom but also his exemplary life anchored in Christ.

Church leaders, government officials, and hundreds of faithful gathered to reflect on Luwum’s enduring legacy.

“We are in the process of establishing a modern center to honor Archbishop Janani Luwum,” President Museveni said.

“This will serve as a place where his teachings, courage, and dedication to faith and country will inspire generations to come,” Museveni added.

The center is expected not only to preserve the history of Luwum’s life and martyrdom but also to spur development in the surrounding area, creating opportunities for education, tourism, and community growth.

“The legacy of Archbishop Janani Luwum will not only inspire faith but also progress. We want the youth and all Ugandans to learn from his courage and service while also benefiting from development initiatives linked to this historic site,” Museveni said.

Luwum, who served as Archbishop of the Church of Uganda from 1974 until his martyrdom in 1977, is remembered for his unwavering stand against oppression under the Idi Amin regime.

The commemoration emphasized the principle that a life well-lived anchored in integrity, service, and faith leaves a lasting impact on society.
