The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), in collaboration with the Department of Meteorological Services (DMS) under the Ministry of Water and Environment, has launched a two-day Aviation Weather Awareness Workshop to address the growing need for improved flight safety.
In his opening remarks, UCAA Director General, Fred K Bamwesigye, emphasized the importance of accurate and timely weather information for aviation safety and efficiency.
“Severe storms, low visibility, and wind shear can disrupt schedules and compromise safety. Accurate, reliable weather information is crucial from take-off to landing. This workshop aims to enhance the capacity of stakeholders to access, interpret, and apply meteorological data effectively,” he said.
Bamwesigye noted that aircraft movements in Uganda have risen from 21,584 in 2021 to 32,552 in 2024, highlighting the need for stronger safety measures to match operational growth. He called on participants to share knowledge and practical solutions to advance aviation safety.
Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Meteorology, Dr Bob Alex Ogwang, stressed that weather information is only valuable when it informs action.
“By working together, we can turn forecasts into proactive safety measures that protect lives, equipment, and schedules,” Dr Ogwang said.
He also highlighted Uganda’s improvements in weather monitoring technology, including radars, wind shear detection systems, and satellite imagery, and encouraged continued investment in both technology and human capacity.
The workshop covers inter-agency collaboration, aviation weather mandates, improving operational efficiency through accurate forecasting, and showcasing advancements in weather monitoring tools. Delegates will also engage in practical sessions to develop strategies for applying weather data in daily aviation operations.
“This event should not just be a meeting, but a milestone in enhancing aviation weather preparedness in Uganda and the region,” Bamwesigye stated.
The Aviation Weather Awareness Workshop, held from 14–15 August at Imperial Golf View Hotel, Entebbe, brings together aviation professionals, airline representatives, and meteorology experts to strengthen collaboration and enhance weather preparedness for aviation safety.
