The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry (MAAIF) and Fisheries has officially launched the 31st National Agricultural Show and the 4th National Agricultural Education Show, both of which will be held at the Agricultural Showgrounds in Jinja. The events will focus on technology, youth, and farm wealth
These twin flagship events, organized in partnership with the Uganda National Farmers Federation (UNFFE), MAAIF, the Ministry of Education and Sports, and other partners, mark a renewed commitment to transforming Uganda’s agricultural landscape.
The events were formally launched on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at the Uganda Media Centre (UMC) by Hon Bright K Rwamirama, the State Minister for Animal Industry.
Rwamirama said that agriculture remains the backbone of Uganda’s economy, employing over 68% of the workforce and contributing 24% to the nation’s GDP, and accounting for the bulk of the country’s export earnings.
However, the sector faces persistent hurdles, including low productivity, climate change, post-harvest losses, inadequate value addition, and limited market access, especially for smallholder farmers.
He further said that youth engagement in agriculture also remains a challenge, with many young people viewing it as a last resort rather than a path to prosperity.
Rwamirama said that despite the challenges, the event also celebrates the country’s progress, innovation, and collaboration across the agriculture sector.
“They provide vital platforms for farmers, agro-entrepreneurs, researchers, students and youth, government institutions, private sector actors, and the wider public to interact, learn, and share knowledge for the transformation of our agriculture and food systems” he added.
He urged all Ugandans, especially individual farmers, farmer groups, cooperatives, associations, and entrepreneurs, to attend, learn, network, and adopt technologies to improve farm productivity and profitability.
The National Agricultural Show is scheduled from June 27 – July 5, 2025, themed “Technological Innovations Driving Farm Wealth,” and the President is expected to grace the opening ceremony on July 1, 2025.
Following the main show, the 4th National Agricultural Education Show will kick off from July 6 – 12, 2025, under the theme “Seeds of Change: Young People Driving Innovations to Harness Agricultural Wealth.”
The event is dedicated to inspiring youth to see agriculture as a vibrant, rewarding career, and the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon Janet Kataaha Museveni, is expected as the Chief Guest on July 9, 2025.
The 31st National Agricultural Show and 4th National Agricultural Education Show are pivotal platforms for advancing Uganda’s agricultural transformation. By promoting technological innovation, youth engagement, and market access, these events address critical challenges while capitalizing on opportunities like Uganda’s delisting from the EU’s high-risk list.
