President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni together with kingdom officials celebrated the 31st Coronation Anniversary of His Majesty Dr Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I, the Omukama (King) of Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, held at Karuzika Palace in Hoima City.
In his address on June 11, 2025, the President reaffirmed government’s commitment to cultural institutions and their vital role in preserving indigenous languages, promoting traditional foods, and safeguarding customs that define the nation’s identity.
“The government is responsible for legislation and economic planning, but cultural institutions must lead in preserving our heritage, especially our languages and food traditions,” he said.
Museveni particularly called for greater efforts to protect indigenous languages, which are increasingly endangered by the dominance of foreign languages such as English and Kiswahili.
According to him, there is a need to promote healthy traditional foods, citing his own longevity and health as a result of consuming cassava, mingled millet, and milk; foods rooted in Uganda’s heritage.
He reminded cultural leaders to remain politically neutral, and focus on their role in promoting socio-economic development rather than engaging in partisan politics.
“Cultural leaders must work together to protect what makes us unique as a people. Only by preserving our culture can we build a more united and prosperous Uganda,” he stated.
The Minister of State for Public Service, Hon. Grace Mary Mugasa also congratulated the Kingdom and thanked President Museveni for his continued support to Bunyoro-Kitara.
The celebrations were attended by Kingdom officials, government officials, and thousands of jubilant subjects.
