Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kampala has adjourned veteran opposition leader, Kizza Besigye’s bail hearing in a court session schedule today March 7, 2025.

Besigye, along with co-accused Hajji Obeid Kamulegeya is facing treason charges stemming from allegations of plotting to overthrow the Ugandan government between 2023 and November 2024.

However, the court adjourned the case until March 28, 2025, for the next sitting, leaving Besigye and his supporters awaiting further developments in this high-profile legal battle.

Presiding over the session, Magistrate Esther Nyadoi stated that the adjournment was necessary to allow the prosecution to finalize their submissions.

“The prosecution requires more time to conclude their investigations before the court can proceed with the bail application,” Nyadoi said.

On February 21, Magistrate Esther Nyadoi had already remanded Besigye and his co-accused until March 7, citing the need for the prosecution to complete investigations.

“The bail hearing delay aligns with standard judicial procedures in complex cases such as treason.” Nyadoi noted.

The charges allege that the duo conspired in various locations like Geneva, Athens, Nairobi, and Kampala to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni’s government, including soliciting military and financial support.

Besigye has been held at Luzira Upper Prison since his arraignment on February 21, 2025, when he was formally charged with treason alongside Lutale.

Today’s adjournment suggests that the state may have again requested more time, a move that has frustrated Besigye’s legal team and supporters, who see it as a tactic to prolong his detention.

His lawyer, Erias Lukwago, has repeatedly urged the court to grant bail or transfer Besigye to a private medical facility, arguing that his health is deteriorating in Luzira Prison.

Erias Lukwago, criticized the delay, saying no evidence has been presented, violating the detainees’ rights.

Despite the defence’s pleas, Nyadoi maintained that the court must ensure due process is followed before granting bail.

The adjournment leaves Besigye and his supporters awaiting the next court session, as his legal battle continues.
