Leaders of the Uganda People’s Congress party(UPC) have hailed the Electoral Commission for extending the voter registration and voters update exercise by one week.

The Electoral Commission started updating the National Voters Register on February 10, 2025 ahead of the 2025-2026 general election. The three-week exercise was expected to end on February 10, 2025, at different update stations in communities.

On February 10, 2025, EC Chairman justice Mugenyi Byabakama Simon announced a seven day extension for the exercise after the commission’s deliberation from observations in the field and assessment, as well as appeals from stakeholders.

Reacting to the news, UPC spokesperson Sharon Oyat Arach on February , 12, 2025 during a press briefing thanked the electoral commission for the initiative but however added that the time is still not enough for majority Ugandans to update their details.

“We would like to appreciate the electoral commission for extending the registration days but we were hoping for an extension for at least six months to enable many people to update their details and new ones to register,” Arach said.

The UPC spokesperson said that the party is optimistic that the extension remains continuous so that people can continue registering and updating their details because this will give time to even those who are making 18 years in a few months to also be able to register.

During the briefing, UPC head of Media and communications Muzeyi Faisal also gave an update about the Kawempe north by election stating that as a party they have not yet received any UPC party member interested in the Kawempe North By election seat but promised that if one offers themselves before the registration deadline then the party will surely support and be part of the elections.
