Stakeholders in Moroto district have held a regional sensitization workshop for district officers from the Karamoja region focusing on updating and displaying details on the National Voters’ registers for Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in the region.
The meeting held on January 10, 2025, at the district headquarters included representatives from various districts, security agencies, and political parties to discuss the legal framework for the registration of the SIGs.
The leader of the Electoral Commission team, Commissioner Peter Emorut, expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their cooperation and updated the attendees on the recruitment of supervisors at sub-county and parish levels.
He also announced that the National Voters’ Register update will take place from January 20 to February 20, 2025, with the SIGs update scheduled for 2-3 days within that period.
Among the topics discussed were the legal framework, procedure, and the role of stakeholders in the update and display of the National Voters’ Register and registers for SIGs.
The workshop emphasized the crucial role of security agencies, particularly the Uganda Police Force (UPF), in maintaining law and order during the election process.
The UPF is responsible for providing security for update stations, display centers and enforcing electoral laws and guidelines to prevent electoral violence.
This initiative aligns with President Yoweri Museveni’s appeal to supporters of the National Resistance Movement to embrace the upcoming National Voters’ Register Update exercise.
In a statement released on Tuesday, January 6, 2025, Museveni said during the update exercise, the registered voters’ names will be displayed at every polling station in Uganda so that people go and check to ensure that their names are in the register.
