Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has announced plans to develop a fully refurbished state-of-the art facility at the Namugongo Moslem Shrine.

The unveiled architectural master plan includes the construction of a modern mosque, a museum, a shopping center, offices, and underground parking.

UMSC Secretary for Grants and Social Services, Imam Kajiko while speaking to journalists on May 22, 2025 at the council offices revealed that they have a budget in the development committee that will cover the 7acres of land to have many infrastructures.

“We have a bigger budget under the chairmanship of Professor Badru Katerega who leads the martyr’s day development committee and that budget was presented to his HE the president who issued a directive to the ministry to compensate the squatters at Namugongo,” Kajiko said.

Imam Kajiko disclosed that a number of events have been planned before the grand event that will include tree planting, visiting the sick and several charity activities.

The redevelopment of the Martyrs site will bring it up to the standards of other faith-based tourism sites in the country which includes reclaiming land that had been illegally occupied and used for commercial purposes.

The facility is projected to draw 50,000 plus visitors annually in addition to a health center that   will provide first aid services during martyr’s day celebrations and be run by Uganda Moslem medical bureau.

UMSC has also announced change of the commemoration of its muslim martys to June 10, 2025 and June 11, 2025 to avoid confusion with the Christian festivities. This is after UMSC confirmed taking part in this year’s commemoration to honor hundreds of moslems who perished during religious persecutions from 1985 to 1890 and beyond.
