“Bwekumbule’s detention is viewed as an attempt to shield some leaders from public accountability which is unacceptable. The Association therefore demands that he unconditionally be released or produced before court if he is suspected to have committed any crime,” the statement read in part.

The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has expressed dissatisfaction with the continued detention of a journalist at Masaka Central police station.

In a statement released in the UJA platform on April 23rd, 2026, the association is disturbed by the continued detention of journalist Frank Bwekumbule working for Impact FM allegedly on Justine Nameere’s orders.

Bwekumbule has been held at Masaka CPS since April 21st, 2026, after his arrest.

He is accused of having taken a video recording of a one Cissy Nanyange, a coffee seedlings supplier in Masaka claiming that Nameere defaulted paying her for the seedlings supplied to her during campaigns.

“Bwekumbule’s detention is viewed as an attempt to shield some leaders from public accountability which is unacceptable. The Association therefore demands that he unconditionally be released or produced before court if he is suspected to have committed any crime,” the statement read in part.

The statement highlighted that the association stands in solidarity with Bwekumbule and will keep the fight on in ensuring that he regains his freedom.
