Uganda Airlines Suspends Flights to Kinshasa Amid DRC Unrest

Uganda Airlines has announced the suspension of its flights to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), following the escalating conflict in the region, including security concerns in the capital city.

In a travel notice dated January 28, 2025, the Entebbe-based (EBB) airline canceled its FIH flights due to safety risks in Central Africa, which is currently experiencing widespread unrest. 

“The suspension has become necessary as a result of the ongoing unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including in the Capital Kinshasa. Flights will remain suspended until the situation warrants normal operations,” the airline said.

The decision comes amid growing instability, with international organizations sounding alarms over the dire humanitarian situation.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned of significant risks, including the possibility of an Ebola virus outbreak from a laboratory near the fighting in Goma.

ICRC Regional Director for Africa, Patrick Youssef, described the situation as “critical,” urging for measures to preserve samples and prevent catastrophic consequences.

The unrest in Kinshasa has seen rising tensions, with protesters storming foreign embassies, including those of France, Belgium, the US, and Uganda. Social media footage shows demonstrators clashing with police, burning tires, and demanding action over the escalating crisis.

Uganda Airlines affirmed its commitment to passenger safety and pledged to resume operations once the situation stabilizes, as regional stakeholders and international organizations work to address the growing crisis.
