A tragic boat accident on Lake Victoria has left three people dead and several others missing following an incident near Bugoto Landing Site in Mayuge District.

According to police, the boat overturned in waters off Bukabooli Sub-county under circumstances that are still being investigated. The exact number of passengers on board at the time of the accident has not yet been confirmed.

Michael Kasadha, the Busoga East Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said emergency response teams were quickly dispatched to the scene.

Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased include one adult woman and two children. Four people were rescued from the water.

Rescue efforts are still ongoing, with police and local teams continuing to search for more victims believed to be missing. Officers from Mayuge Central Police Station are leading the operation while also carrying out investigations to establish the cause of the accident.

Authorities have renewed calls for strict observance of water transport safety measures, especially on Lake Victoria, which has recorded similar fatal incidents in the past.
