The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has strongly condemned a wave of antisemitic attacks targeting synagogues (houses of worship) and Jewish institutions in Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, and the United States, calling for immediate investigations and the prosecution of those responsible.

Türk made these remarks on 18th March 2026, in Geneva and urged the governments of the affected countries to take swift and decisive action immediately so as protect communities and hold perpetrators accountable.

“Anti-Semitism has no place in our world. Governments must step up to ensure the safety and dignity of all religious communities,” the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stated.

Türk’s statement follows prior warnings from the UN Human Rights Office about the rising threats of hate speech, vandalism, and violence against Jewish communities worldwide.

He emphasized that authorities must act without delay to investigate these attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice, warning that any hesitation could encourage further hate crimes and threaten the fundamental right to religious freedom.

“No one should live in fear because of their beliefs. Every individual has the right to practice their faith openly and securely,” Türk added.

These attacks occur amid rising global tensions and a marked increase in anti-Semitism in several Western countries, hence the UN’s commitment to combating all forms of religious hatred and discrimination in accordance with international human rights standards.

Türk emphasized that swift action is essential not only to ensure justice but also to rebuild public trust and prevent the situation from escalating, with the UN Human Rights Office ready to assist national authorities in their investigations.

“Immediate action is critical to uphold justice and safeguard communities, and the UN Human Rights Office is prepared to assist where needed,” the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stated.

Türk’s remarks serve as a stark reminder that combating anti-Semitism and protecting religious freedom require vigilance, decisive action, and international cooperation.

The UN’s call highlights the urgent need for governments to act swiftly, ensure justice, and safeguard all communities against hatred and intimidation.
