The Arrest of Anita Among will Show Government Commitment to Fight Corruption-Olanya

‎"Very many people have been arraigned in court on corruption charges but all these are pawns and just being used to be sacrificed. The main people to be charged and sent behind bars are Anita Annet Among, the former speaker and the Hon. Adolf Mwesige, the clerk to parliament who also happens to be the accounting officer at parliament and no single coin can be released without his knowledge. These two are the main culprits and we will all be happy if charged in court and then remanded for the massive corruption we have seen at parliament,” Olanya said.

The Kilak South Member of Parliament, Gilbert Olanya has said that should Annet Anita Among be arrested then after arraigned in court and remanded to Luzira, it would have been a big step in the fight against corruption and will show that the government is committed to fight corruption.‎

‎Olanya made these remarks while addressing members of the press at the Anti-corruption court on Tuesday, July 7th, 2026, in Nakasero.

‎”Very many people have been arraigned in court on corruption charges but all these are pawns and just being used to be sacrificed.

‎When asked why members of parliament have been silent and didn’t say a word while Among was still the Speaker of Parliament and all this embezzlement was happening before them all, Olanya said that many Mps were scared of her as a speaker because she was untouchable and was like a semi god.

‎” While Anita Among was still speaker of parliament she was like a small god and all of us Members of parliament feared to speak about her because this would mean you would never be allowed to speak again for your people on the floor of parliament or even be given any opportunity for any foreign trip to benchmark for your country. Many of us remained silent and now that she is no longer speaker, we are free to comment,” Olanya added.

‎Among and many others under her former office as speaker of parliament for the 2021-2026 term are being accused of corruption, which saw billions of Uganda shillings being stolen from parliament through her alleged many accomplices.

‎While appearing before the Anti-corruption court on July, 7th, 2026, the Director of Parliament Communication, Chris Obore and six parliament officials were remanded to Luzira till July 27th, 2026, on the same charges of corruption and embezzlement.

Among is set to appear before the Anti-corruption court on Tuesday, July 7th, 2026, and many Ugandans were seen outside the court premises waiting to see the former speaker behind the docks on charges of corruption and what her fate would after.
