Uganda’s Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, has revealed that government is aware of the whereabouts of the missing Amuria District Woman Member of Parliament (MP), Margaret Etilu, and that efforts are underway to secure her release.

Nabbanja made the remarks during the 4th plenary sitting of the 1st Meeting of the 1st Session of the 12th Parliament on June 10th, 2026, after the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), Joel Ssenyonyi, raised concerns over continued human rights violations involving missing persons.

He specifically cited the recent disappearance of Etilu, whose whereabouts had remained unknown for several days.

Reports indicate that the legislator was arrested from the residence of former Speaker Annet Anita Among, commonly referred to as “AAA,” in Nakasero, Kampala.

Addressing parliament on the matter, Nabbanja said Etilu’s family had already been informed about her condition and assured the country that the legislator will be expected to regain her freedom soon.

“The family has been informed, and she is expected to be released,” she said.

The prime minister further explained that the government would provide a comprehensive and official account of the incident through the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

She noted that security agencies and other relevant authorities are currently handling the matter and that a detailed report will be issued to clarify the circumstances surrounding Etilu’s arrest, detention, and anticipated release.

Vice President Jessica Alupo also addressed parliament on the issue, confirming that Etilu had been able to meet some of her family members while in detention.

“Hon. Margaret Etilu, the Amuria District Woman MP who is in detention, has been able to meet with some of her family members and will be released this week and is expected to rejoin the House at any time during the course of the week,” Alupo said.

The development follows days of public concern and speculation after reports emerged indicating that Etilu had allegedly gone missing for more than a week. Earlier reports also suggested that security operatives had been conducting operations linked to residences associated with senior political figures.

The matter has since sparked debate within political and public circles, with several leaders and human rights advocates calling for greater transparency from government regarding the detention of political leaders and elected representatives.

The case has also reignited discussions surrounding security operations involving politicians and public officials, particularly at a time of heightened political activity following the commencement of the new parliamentary term.
