The remains of celebrated Ugandan musician Prince Paul Kafeero have been exhumed as part of a court-ordered DNA testing process aimed at resolving a paternity dispute that has remained unsettled for more than two decades.

The exhumation was conducted on Monday morning under tight supervision from forensic experts and law enforcement officials. The exercise seeks to establish the biological relationship between Kafeero and more than 20 individuals claiming to be his children.

The development was confirmed by Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, who described the process as a major breakthrough in a long-running family dispute that has divided relatives of the late singer for years.

According to Barugahara, the exhumation and collection of DNA samples were carried out by a team of pathologists led by Assistant Inspector General of Police Dr. Byaruhanga, in line with court directives and established forensic procedures.

The samples are expected to be analyzed by the Government Analytical Laboratory together with the Uganda Police Forensic Laboratory to determine the authenticity of the paternity claims through scientific evidence.

Barugahara said the dispute has caused prolonged tension within Kafeero’s family and expressed optimism that the DNA results would finally provide clarity and closure to everyone involved.

“Following the successful exhumation of his remains this morning for DNA sampling, a process that has remained unresolved for over 20 years is finally underway. The family has been engaged in a prolonged dispute over this matter, and today marks a major step toward establishing the truth,” Barugahara said.

He also thanked the court, family members, forensic experts, and the Uganda Police Force for facilitating the exercise.

The minister further revealed that he personally financed the process to ensure it was completed in the interest of justice and family harmony.

“I am also grateful to have fully facilitated this exercise in the interest of justice, truth, and family harmony,” he added.

Prince Paul Kafeero remains one of Uganda’s most influential musicians, widely remembered for his contribution to Kadongo Kamu music and his enduring cultural impact. Years after his death, his music continues to enjoy widespread popularity across the country.

The outcome of the DNA tests is expected to determine whether the claimants will officially be recognized as his biological children and potentially gain rights related to inheritance and family recognition.
