NUP Releases Partial List of Vetted Local Government Candidates Ahead of September Nominations

“This has been a competitive process. All candidates were strong, but the EMC selected the best. Congratulations to those who were chosen but do not let this success make you prideful or dismissive of others. Remain humble; this is only the beginning,” Kyagulanyi said.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has released a partial list of flag bearers for local government positions who have successfully cleared the party’s vetting process, signaling the party’s readiness ahead of the upcoming nominations by the Electoral Commission.

Harriet Chemutai, head of the NUP Election Management Committee (EMC), handed over the list to the party leadership during a press briefing at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule today on 29th August, 2025.

She confirmed that the list includes candidates for various local government leadership roles, including LC III chairpersons, mayors, LC V chairpersons, and councilors across the country.

“After a rigorous vetting process, we are pleased to hand over all candidates for local government positions. This is inclusive of LC III, mayors, LC V, and councilors for all positions in Uganda,” Chemutai said.

She added that candidates for parliamentary seats are still undergoing vetting and will be announced at a later date.

Chemutai emphasized the urgency of the release, noting that nominations for local government positions by the Electoral Commission, headed by Byabakama, are set to begin on 3rd September 2025.

“This list is timely and ensures that candidates are ready for the nomination process,” she added.

NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoyya said the lists will be published on the party’s official website and social media platforms today.

He added that a special committee will handle complaints from any aggrieved candidates over the weekend, from Saturday 30th to Sunday 31st August, 2025.

“We will publish a full list of all successful candidates on our official website, Facebook, and X pages. Any unsuccessful candidate who is unhappy and dissatisfied with the results will have the weekend to lodge their complaints,” Rubongoya said.

Following the handover, NUP party President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu congratulated the successful candidates but urged them to remain humble.

“This has been a competitive process. All candidates were strong, but the EMC selected the best. Congratulations to those who were chosen but do not let this success make you prideful or dismissive of others. Remain humble; this is only the beginning,” Kyagulanyi said.

He further encouraged those not selected to support the party’s flag bearers in the upcoming elections.

“For those who were not chosen, it does not mean you were unworthy. Do not dwell on it or be hard on yourself.” Kyagulanyi stated.

“We have a bigger goal to achieve, and this is not just about positions. While these roles are important, our ultimate aim is to win the presidency. We all have a part to play, so let us come together, support each other, and push this struggle forward,” he added.

As Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, political parties, including NUP, are finalizing their candidate vetting processes to ensure readiness ahead of the Electoral Commission’s nomination period for local government and parliamentary positions in early September.
