Luweero District Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Seth Katabazi has called on youth leaders from all political parties to be ambassadors of peace as Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections.

Speaking at a meeting organized by the Netherlands Institute of Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) held at Luweero Apartments Hotel in Luweero town on April 3, 2025, Katabazi emphasized the critical role young leaders’ play in maintaining stability during the electoral season.

”I urge all youth leaders to embrace peace and encourage their peers to do the same as we head into the 2026 elections because Uganda is here, and Uganda will stay even after we are long gone,” Katabazi said.

Katabazi also encouraged youth leaders to prioritize competence over political affiliation when choosing leaders in the upcoming elections.

“As we head into the 2026 elections, please vote for people based on their capability, regardless of their political party. Here in Luweero, we have leaders from different parties who are performing well, and we would still recommend them irrespective of their affiliation,” he added.

David Mugarra, the manager at NIMD, reechoed Katabazi’s sentiments and also urged the young people not to be used for violence during the coming elections but rather to be peace builders.

“In past elections, many young people have been used as instruments of violence and radicalism, but moving forward, can we be agents of peace and prioritize protecting Uganda as our country?”Mugarra asked .

Additionally, Ismail Kirya, the president of Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) and chairman of the Multi-Party Youth Forum, provided further insight into the event.

He noted that the forum comprises six political parties represented in Parliament which include National Resistance Movement (NRM), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), Democratic Party (DP), Justice Forum (JEEMA), and People’s Progressive Party (PPP) alongside youth organizations such as the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA), National Youth Council (NYC), and Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Youth Affairs.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) was expected to join as the seventh member but declined to participate

The conference was held under the theme “Peaceful and Meaningful Participation of Youth in the 2025-2026 General Elections.”
