High Court Clears 36 FDC Katonga Members of Terrorism Charges

The group had been arrested in Kisumu, Kenya, in July 2025 during a conference and later deported to Uganda, where they were charged under Sections 6(1)(b) and 2(b) of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The International Crimes Division (ICD) of the High Court has dismissed all terrorism and treason charges against 36 members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga faction.

The group had been arrested in Kisumu, Kenya, in July 2025 during a conference and later deported to Uganda, where they were charged under Sections 6(1)(b) and 2(b) of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Following their arrest by Kenyan authorities, the individuals were handed over to Ugandan security forces, prompting widespread public concern and debate over the motivations behind the charges.

Speaking after the ruling, FDC lawyer Erias Lukwago described the decision as “a positive step towards upholding the rights of the accused and a clear indication of the court’s independence and commitment to the rule of law.”

The dismissal of the case marks a significant affirmation of justice and due process, highlighting the judiciary’s dedication to protecting constitutional rights. It also reinforces public trust in the independence of Uganda’s legal system and sets a strong precedent for fair and impartial trials.
