Moses Matovu, a musician with Uganda’s renowned Afrigo Band, has died after sustaining serious injuries in a suspected attack in Kampala.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Rachael Kawala, police at Kabalagala registered a case of suspected murder following an incident that occurred on Thursday, September 24th, 2026, at Kibuli Depot in Makindye Division, Kampala District.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that at about 5:30 a.m., Matovu, 77 years went to his girlfriend’s residence. Police said that as the two were leaving the residence, they were allegedly confronted by a man who had previously been in a relationship with the same woman.
A physical altercation is believed to have followed, although police said the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and Matovu’s death have not yet been fully established.
Matovu sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The police have arrested the woman who was with Matovu at the time of the incident. She remains in custody and is assisting detectives with the investigation.
The police have positively identified the male suspect, but believe he fled the scene. The police further highlighted that efforts are underway to locate and arrest the suspect.
Investigators are continuing to verify the different accounts surrounding the incident and establish what exactly led to Matovu’s death.
The police have appealed to the public to remain calm and allow investigations to proceed without interference, while expressing condolences to Matovu’s family, friends, colleagues and fans.
