PLU Reverses Speaker Endorsement, Orders MPs to Back Museveni Picks

Kabanda said the endorsement issued on March 11th, 2026, by PLU Chairman General Muhoozi Kainerugaba for Right Honorable Annet Anita Among as Speaker and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker “is retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.”

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has withdrawn its earlier endorsement of specific candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament and directed its members-elect to support those to be presented by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

PLU Secretary-General Daudi Kabanda (MP for Kasambya County) announced the decision at a press conference held on May 12th, 2026, at the party headquarters on Saddler Lane in Naguru.

Kabanda said the endorsement issued on March 11th, 2026, by PLU Chairman General Muhoozi Kainerugaba for Right Honorable Annet Anita Among as Speaker and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker “is retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.”

He added that the leadership of the Patriotic League of Uganda now encourages its members of parliament-elect to support the candidates that will be presented to them by President Museveni for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

“In the Patriotic League of Uganda we follow the command instructions and guidance of our chairman General Muhoozi Kainerugaba at all times,” Kabanda said.

The move came as the NRM Chairman who is also the President of Uganda was expected to present alternative candidates to the NRM Caucus and Central Executive Committee.

Kabanda was flanked by PLU Director for Mobilization Michael Mawanda and other members-elect during the briefing.

The announcement underscored PLU’s alignment with the ruling party’s position ahead of the election of parliamentary leadership.
