The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has flagged off Battle Group XLVII (BG 47) for deployment to Somalia, marking another phase in Uganda’s sustained contribution to regional peacekeeping efforts under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia.

The flag-off ceremony followed the successful completion of pre-deployment training at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre in Singo, Nakaseke District, where troops have undergone months of rigorous preparation since November last year.

Presiding over the event, the UPDF 1st Division Commander, Fred Mwesigye, representing Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba, commended the soldiers for their discipline and past contributions, particularly in maintaining stability during recent electoral operations.

“You are going on a mission, not for leisure. Remain focused, work as a team, and adhere strictly to the guidance of your commanders,” Brig Gen Mwesigye told the troops.

He cautioned against misconduct, warning that indiscipline including alcohol abuse and negligence could compromise both personal safety and the reputation of the force.

“The eyes of the country are on you. Go and perform your duties professionally and return safely,” he added, urging the soldiers to uphold the UPDF’s image while on international assignment.

In the similar attendance Commandant of IPSOTC, Moses Nabaasa, revealed that the battle group’s preparedness currently stands at 95 per cent, reflecting what he described as a strong level of readiness for peace support operations.

“The overall preparedness of the Battle Group stands at 95 per cent, which is a strong testament to the commitment and resilience of both the trainees and instructors,” Col Nabaasa said.

He also emphasised unity among the troops, reminding them of their collective responsibility as representatives of Uganda on the global stage.

“You are going as one Battle Group united in purpose and bound by duty. Be good ambassadors of Uganda and uphold the values of the UPDF,” he advised.

Battle Group XLVII will join other UPDF contingents already operating in Somalia, where Ugandan forces remain a critical component of African Union-led efforts to stabilise the Horn of Africa nation, combat insurgency, and support state-building initiatives.

Uganda has long been one of the largest troop contributors to peacekeeping operations in Somalia, and the deployment of BG 47 reinforces Kampala’s strategic commitment to regional security.
