Uganda has renewed efforts to narrow its widening trade imbalance with Japan by promoting its export potential and investment opportunities during preparations for Expo 2027 Belgrade.

The push was highlighted during the 2nd International Participants Meeting held from March 10th –12th, 2026 in Belgrade, Serbia, where global delegations gathered to plan participation in the upcoming world exposition.

Ugandan officials revealed that the country currently exports goods worth about USD 14 million to Japan annually, while imports from Japan stand at approximately USD 425 million, underscoring a significant trade deficit and the need to diversify Uganda’s export base.

To address the imbalance, Uganda is positioning high-value products such as specialty coffee, cocoa, and horticultural products as strategic exports capable of penetrating Japan’s premium markets.

Authorities believe leveraging the global exposure of Expo 2027 could help boost demand for Ugandan products while strengthening bilateral economic ties.

The Ugandan delegation was led by Wilson Mbadi Mbasu, who emphasized that the exposition offers a critical opportunity for Uganda to present its economic potential to international investors.

“This Expo 2027 will be a platform for showcasing Uganda’s unique offerings, from its rich cultural heritage to its remarkable natural attractions,” Mbadi said.

Yoshida Norimasa, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Uganda, said the engagement provides an important avenue for companies from both countries to build partnerships and expand trade cooperation.

The meeting was also attended by Elizabeth Paula Napeyok, reflecting Uganda’s broader strategy of using global platforms to promote innovation, tourism, culture, and investment.

Officials say Uganda’s participation in Expo 2027 preparations will play a key role in expanding exports, attracting investment, and deepening economic ties with Japan and other global markets.
