The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 15 Marine Brigade has passed out 53 soldiers after successfully completing specialized maritime courses at the Coxswain Maritime Sustainment Base in Ntokolo, Mayuge District.
Of the graduates, 22 completed the Coxswain Level II course, while 31 undertook the Maritime Basic Induction Course. The training equips them with essential skills for operations on Uganda’s water bodies.
Presiding over the ceremony, UPDF Joint Staff Logistics, Brigadier General Godwin Karugaba, commended the Marine forces for protecting Uganda’s shared natural resources, especially lakes and rivers.
He noted that water bodies shared with neighboring countries can pose security risks, as they may be used by hostile groups to enter the country.
“These shared resources, especially lakes and rivers, can be used as routes for hostile elements. I thank the UPDF Marine forces for protecting them and ensuring continued peace in Uganda,” Brig Gen Karugaba said.
He said the completion of the courses strengthens the UPDF’s operational capacity and professionalism. Uganda’s water bodies cover about 15 percent of the country’s surface area, making a well-trained marine force very important.
Brig Gen Karugaba urged the soldiers to take all training seriously, noting that knowledge and technical skills are key in modern military operations.
The Commander of the 15 Marine Brigade, Brigadier General Michael Nyarwa, thanked the Chief of Defence Forces for prioritizing training and capacity building within the Marine Brigade and the UPDF.
He said the force operates across land, air and water, guided by principles that promote professionalism and discipline.
The Commandant of the Marine Training School, Colonel David Kararira, described the courses as important for marine personnel, saying they provide practical skills needed for effective maritime operations.
During the ceremony, Corporal Denis Akantorana was recognized as the best overall student in the Coxswain course. Corporal Agaba Victor excelled in small boat handling, while Private Kyawe Collins was the best student in navigation.
The event was attended by the Combat Engineering Brigade Commander and Cantonment Commander of Magamaga Barracks, Brigadier General Richard Wakayinja, the Mayuge District RDC Hajj Ramathan Walugembe, Chairman-elect LCV Mayuge District David Zijja, senior UPDF officers and other invited guests.
