The Minister of State for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Joseph Kabuye Kyofatogabye, has said the outcome of Kampala’s recent Lord Mayoral election reflects growing frustration among voters in the capital.

National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Ronald Balimwezo was declared the winner after securing more than 141,000 votes, defeating several candidates, including long-serving city Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, and ending his more than decade-long tenure at City Hall.

Giving his opinion on national affairs during a local broadcast on February 10th, 2026, Kyofakabuye said that the outcome of the Lord Mayoral race demonstrated the public’s desire for change in the city’s leadership direction.

“Voting in Ronald Balimwezo was a demonstration of the long-standing frustration of the people of Kampala. They said enough is enough,” he said.

Minister Kyofatogabye lauded Balimwezo as passionate and developmental especially pertaining defending the KCCA infrastructure budgets.

“Ronald Balimwezo is a passionate guy who wants to see new changes and developments. For the last three budgets I have taken to parliament, he has been my right-hand man,” he stated.

He emphasized that citizens should not fear participating in elections, noting that government institutions remain committed to working with all residents regardless of political preference.

“Nobody is punished for voting for the opposition. The only thing we are saying is, please ease our work,” Kyofatogabye noted.

The minister referred to the election moment as a relief for many residents who hope that the new leadership will improve service delivery and urban management.

“God has really saved the people of Kampala,” he added.

Balimwezo’s election marks a significant political transition in Kampala, with results highlighting increased urban demands for improved infrastructure, accountability, and responsive leadership across the city.
