The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, is deeply concerned about the escalating violence in South Sudan. He urges the people of South Sudan to show restraint and return to the peace process.
In a press release issued on 27 January 2026, the Chairperson mentioned the worsening security situation especially in Jonglei State, where the renewed conflict has led to a large number of civilians being displaced.
He condemned any acts of violence against civilians. He said that all parties to the conflict have a fundamental obligation to ensure the protection of civilians.
The statement expresses concern at the continuing violations of the Permanent Ceasefire set up under the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R- ARCSS). The Chairperson pointed out that such violations have a very serious negative humanitarian impact.
H.E. Mr. Youssouf urged South Sudanese players to be extremely careful in their actions, to calm down the situation right away and to fully abide by the peace agreement. They should also strictly follow the ceasefire and the power, sharing agreements.
The Chairperson recognized that the South Sudanese leaders have publicly committed to peace. However, he called them to put the interest of the nation first and to seek help from an inclusive dialogue and peaceful means to settle their differences.
Only in this way will the successful completion of the country’s Transitional Period be possible, according to the thoughts expressed in the statement.
The African Union reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting South Sudan’s pursuit of lasting peace, stability, and national reconciliation. The Commission pledged to continue working closely with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations, and other international partners to achieve this objective.
