Chaos and drama ensued as National Unity platform (NUP) party president, Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu attempted to evade a tense standoff with police before officially kicking off his Buganda region in Mityana District.

Kyagulanyi, who is one of eight candidates vying for presidency in 2026, was faced with roadblocks en route to his rally in Busunju Town Council, forcing him to take a boda boda from Namayumba to Busunju playgrounds to reach his supporters.

Addressing the enthusiastic crowd at his first venue in Busunju town Council, on Monday October 6th, 2025, he called upon the people of Buganda to take charge in the fight to remove president Museveni from power.

“The people of Buganda were responsible for bringing president Museveni, they hide him in Buganda and helped him to power and it’s our responsibility to be in charge to have him out of power,” Kyagulanyi said.

He promised to reach all corners of the country and engage with his supporters despite all the setbacks.

“On my way here, they blocked the road at Namayumba and I promised that I will have to reach the people at all costs and I had to use a boda boda. They didn’t do that in Busoga but they want to do it in Buganda, last time you voted us very much and that means the Buganda have understood the issue,” Kyagulanyi added.

The NUP vice president for Buganda, Muwanga Kivumbi asked the voters in Buganda to vote everyone on the NUP ticket to show the Party’s momentum in winning the 2026 elections.

“NRM is saying that the last election it was a NUP wave and people just voted umbrella but this time we shall show them. If someone doesn’t come on umbrella just know that is sponsored by President Museveni,” Kivumbi said.

Kyagulanyi’s Buganda tour is part of his second week of campaigning across the country. He is scheduled to visit several districts, including Mityana, Kassanda, Mubende, Kyankwanzi, Kiboga, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola, in an effort to build support ahead of the 2026 presidential election.
