The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has strongly dismissed a fake press release circulating on social media that falsely claims Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has been closed to the public.

In an official statement issued today, June 26, 2025, Bashir Hangi, UWA’s Communications Manager, confirmed that the sanctuary is fully open and operational, with all tourism activities continuing without interruption.

“We categorically state that the release is false, misleading, and did not originate from UWA,” Hangi emphasized.
“We urge the public, media, tour operators, and all stakeholders to disregard the document in circulation.”

Located in Nakasongola District, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a cornerstone of Uganda’s conservation efforts and the only place in the country where southern white rhinos can be seen. It remains a major attraction for both local and international tourists, contributing significantly to ecotourism and wildlife conservation.

UWA reassured the public that the rhino population is safe, closely monitored, and well protected. The sanctuary continues to play a vital role in the country’s broader wildlife conservation and tourism strategies.

The Authority echoed its commitment to transparency and factual communication, urging the public and stakeholders to rely solely on official UWA communication channels, including its verified social media platforms and website.

For any inquiries, verification, or official updates, the public is encouraged to contact UWA’s Communications Office directly or visit the UWA official website.
