Fuel Price Hike Worries Ugandan Drivers and Daily Commuters

19

Earlier this week, Ugandans experienced a slight increase in fuel prices, sparking concern among vehicle-dependent workers such as taxi drivers, delivery personnel, and others. Many expressed worry that the price hike could significantly affect their daily income and, in the long run, have a broader economic impact on the general population.

In response to public concern, the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) confirmed that fuel prices had risen from UGX 4,990 to UGX 5,080 at major petrol stations, including Total Uganda and Shell Uganda. However, UNOC assured the public that efforts are underway to stabilize fuel prices in the near future.

“As UNOC we are committed to combat the situation, the increase was as a result of logistical challenges that affected petroleum deliveries along Kenya boarder but we are doing whatever necessary to arrest the situation by importing more 35 million litres of petroleum fuel through Tanzania boarder which will normalize pump fuel prices’’ UNOC officials stated

Addionally, UNOC also revealed that in a bid to combat the skyrocketing of fuel prices on 2nd June 2025, 90 million litres of petroleum were available for Ugandan Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) for delivery in Uganda via Kenya

Between 6th to 8th June 2025 Uganda will receive more 200 million litres of diesel, petrol and Jet A1 for Uganda’s fuel distributors

“UNOC is committed to work closely with both local and regional partners to prevent the sudden increase of fuel prices’’ UNOC stated

According to global prices website Uganda is one of the countries in East Africa that charges a lot of its Petroleum products hence the need of adopting electric vehicles (EVs) as part of  transition from petroleum based transport to cleaner, more sustainable mobility. The move comes amid rising global fuel prices and growing concerns over environmental sustainability.
