President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has advised Ugandans to avoid mixing politics with religion and instead focus on wealth creation to achieve lasting prosperity.
The President made the remarks while addressing pilgrims at the Namugongo Anglican Martyrs’ Shrine on Tuesday, June 3, during this year’s Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebration, where he served as the chief guest.

“I urge believers to strive for prosperity while avoiding the mixing of politics with religion. Let us focus on building wealth, embracing patriotism, and working hard for the betterment of our country,” Museveni said.
The President commended the pilgrims who walked from various parts of the country and beyond to commemorate the 45 Ugandan Christian converts martyred between 1885 and 1887 for their faith.
He also directed that the government should include Martyrs’ Day celebrations in the national budget to ensure consistent financial support for the annual event.

This year, the government contributed UGX 2 billion to the Catholic shrine, another UGX 2 billion to the Anglican shrine, and UGX 200 million to support the Muslim community’s participation.
“We will also continue to support our Muslim brothers and sisters when they are ready. Congratulations to everyone. Long live freedom of speech, and may the Almighty God bless you,” the President said.
The 2025 celebration was hosted by the Northern Uganda Cluster under the theme, “Imitating God’s Goodness by Doing Good” (Galatians 6:9–10), and attracted thousands of local and international pilgrims.
