Uganda Police has issued a stern warning to pilgrims about the presence of criminal elements and impostors who exploit the religious event for personal gain ahead of the annual Uganda Martyrs Day.

Speaking during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Naguru on Monday, May 12, 2025, police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke urged pilgrims to remain vigilant as large crowds expected at the celebration could attract pickpockets, scammers, and fake clergy.

“In large crowds like these, fake priests are most likely to be man. They will put on holy attires, start to give blessings and collect tithe, and some of our people are going to give them money,” Rusoke said.

He explained that such individuals take advantage of the spiritual atmosphere to deceive and defraud worshippers.

Police raised the alarm over organized criminal gangs, including the notorious ‘Egaali’ group, known for operating during major public events.

Rusoke vowed that law enforcement agencies are on high alert and will act decisively to ensure public safety.

“These muggers… we promise them serious countermeasures. We shall work on them decisively,” he said.

Uganda Martyrs Day, observed annually on June 3rd, draws thousands of pilgrims from across the country and neighboring regions to honor the legacy of the 45 Christian converts martyred between 1885 and 1887. Pilgrims have already started their journey to Namugongo, many traveling long distances on foot.

Security agencies have reassured the public of heightened surveillance and protection measures and urged pilgrims to report any suspicious activity.
