Police in Bukedea are investigating circumstances under which a 12-year-old abandoned a one-year-old baby at their police station on January 14, 2025.

Earlier police reports showed that the 12-year-old (yet to be identified) had gone to seek shelter at the police before disappearing to an unknown destination, leaving the baby behind.

Charles Asupo, the Bukedea probation officer, said the little girl was given a room for the night. She left the baby behind and disappeared, taking with her a police officer’s cell phone.

According to him, it is now two weeks since then, and no one has come forward to claim the child.

This, he said, forced the police to prepare the child for a transfer to an orphanage.

’’The baby’s relatives have not yet been found. The reason why police want to hand her over to an orphanage home where she will be taken care of better,’’ Asupo stated.

As Bukedea Police continue their search for the child’s family, they emphasize the importance of community involvement in ensuring the safety and well-being of children.

The ongoing situation at Bukedea Police Station underscores a troubling trend of child abandonment that requires urgent attention.

It is crucial for local authorities and community organizations to work together to address the root causes of abandonment, including socioeconomic factors and lack of support for young parents.
