The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Excecutive Director, Chris Mukiza, has officially given correction to the misreported Tribal Data in the Provisional National Population and Housing Census 2024 report that was published on October 3, 2024.
According to Mukiza in a statement dated October 14, 2024, much as the tribes of the Acholi, Bagisu, Bakiga, and Langi were misreported in the published provincial report, the figures for the Census 2014 as published in March 2016 are correct.
“It is important to note that the figures for Census 2014 as published in March 2016 are correct. In addition, the data integrity of the Census 2024 is robust and of high quality. However, the Provisional Report published on October 3, 2024, misreported the tribes of Acholi, Bagisu, Bakiga, and Lango for Census 2014 figures, which occurred during comparison of the tribal figures for 2014 and 2024,” the statement read in part.

Mukiza further explained that the correction was in accordance with the United Nations Fundamental Principles of official statistics.
The Bureau also noted that they instituted an independent team of experts to conduct the post-enumeration survey 2024 to validate the scope and content of the Census.
“The findings from the Post-Enumeration Survey will provide insights into the adequacy of the Census 2024,” UBOS noted.

The Bureau further clarified that all religions registered an increase in their followers between the two censuses; however, some religions had a reduction in their share compared to the total population.
Recently, UBOS has been under scrutiny by the public, citing significant errors in tribal population data from the 2024 census provisional report, and this has had many stops to trust the results.

The Bureau admitted to having mistakenly interchanged figures for the Bagisu and Bakiga tribes, and the UBOS ED Mukiza described the discrepancies as human errors occurring during the final reporting stage. He, however, asserted that the overall population growth trends remain valid. The report has since been withdrawn for corrections, and UBOS promised to release a revised version by December 2024.
