Police in Bugiri have arrested a security guard manning the Busowa Health Centre III to help with investigations into the theft of drugs worth millions from the medical facility’s store.

The preliminary information indicates that the incident occurred in the wee hours of June 24, 2024, in Buwunga, Bukooli, in Namayingo district.

During an interview with ASP Diana Nandawula, the Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson, on June 24, 2024, she identified the suspect as Simon Naminya, aged 45, and said that he was arrested on June 24, 2024, not only due to negligence but also to help the police in their investigations.

Nandawula said that preliminary investigations show that whoever broke into the facility’s drug store took his time and knew what they wanted since there were no signs of a forced break-in.

She added that the reason the security guard was arrested was because he might know the person behind the robbery or could have connived with the culprits.

Nandawula noted that among the stolen items are anti-malaria drugs, syrups, amoxicillin, oxygen cylinders, and dozens of boxes of drugs worth millions of money.

’’Whoever did this thinks that they are punishing the government, yet truthfully, you are punishing the locals, especially those that cannot afford medication, by leaving with no drugs, which is so bad,’’ Nandawula disclosed.

As the investigations are currently ongoing, Nandwaula urged the locals or anyone who has any information regarding the stolen drugs to inform the police so that the culprits are arrested.
