UPC Challenges Electoral Commission Over Disqualification of Presidential Flag Bearer

The Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) has formally challenged the decision by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to disqualify its presidential flag bearer ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In a press statement issued on September 23, 2025, from the party’s headquarters at Uganda House in Kampala, UPC President and Member of Parliament, Jimmy Akena, expressed deep concern over what he described as an “unfair” and unconstitutional move by the Commission.

According to Akena, the IEC Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, wrote to the party on September 20, 2025, notifying it that the Commission would not recognize Akena as UPC’s presidential candidate , despite the party having submitted all the required documents, including endorsements from over 98 districts, which had already been verified and confirmed by the Commission.

“The right to contest in an election is a constitutional right that should not be subject to the discretion of the Independent Electoral Commission. The decision undermined both the UPC’s rights and the sanctity of Uganda’s Constitution,”Akena stated.

Akena revealed that UPC has filed for judicial review in the courts of law, seeking to overturn the IEC’s decision, further expressing confidence that the judiciary will uphold justice and ensure his candidature is accepted.

He also urged party members and leaders to remain calm as matters proceed in court, emphasizing the need for continued mobilization ahead of the elections at all levels.

“I congratulate all UPC flag bearers who have already been nominated for various local government positions,” he said.

Akena reaffirmed UPC’s commitment to achieving democratic change through peaceful means. “Rest assured that UPC will pursue all possible and peaceful means to achieve its goals of ensuring a peaceful transition in Uganda and to once again rebuild the very fabrics of our socio-political and economic structure,” he said.

With the matter now before the courts, the outcome will not only determine Jimmy Akena’s political fate but also shape the Uganda Peoples Congress’ participation in the 2026 elections.
